A crucial process has begun to address the global waste problem. Following negotiations at the United Nations last week, a decision was made to seek a global agreement to solve the plastic waste problem, similar to the one reached regarding climate change. As stated by the United Nations Environment Assembly, plastic pollution has become an epidemic, and the preparation of the Agreement is an important step in preventing plastic pollution.
The Treaty on Preventing Plastic Pollution, adopted on March 2, 2022, and described as the most important international environmental agreement after the Paris Agreement, commits United Nations member states to finalize the Treaty by 2024 in order to prevent plastic pollution. At the meetings where the agreement was adopted, it was also decided that forums bringing together all stakeholders would be organized by the end of 2022 to reduce plastic pollution.
According to the details of the agreement, this effort will result in the establishment of an Intergovernmental Negotiating Commission on plastic pollution. The aim of establishing this commission is to address all processes related to plastics from a sustainable, recyclable, and technologically adaptable perspective. After the agreement is prepared as a result of these studies, the United Nations Environment Programme will organize a diplomatic conference to open the relevant convention for signature.
Considering the negative impacts of plastic exposure on human health, this decision is considered quite significant. While it is expected to motivate countries to take action in terms of reducing carbon emissions and protecting marine biodiversity, it is also stated that it could be beneficial in terms of creating new jobs.
The agreement, which is expected to impose restrictions on the production, use, and design of plastics, is projected to have an economic impact on plastic-producing companies and countries.
