Preliminary Report on the Death of a Striped Dolphin in Çeşme

PRELIMINARY REPORT ON THE DEATH OF A STRIPED DOLPHIN IN ÇEŞME
The striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba) named “Ege,” which arrived in Aya Yorgi Bay in Çeşme on June 2, 2017, and lived there for 13 days, died on June 14, 2017, after leaving the bay. Preliminary examination determined that it died due to circulatory problems, infection, and a severe parasitic infestation.

Following a report received by our foundation, we monitored “Ege” from June 4th onwards through businesses in the bay and concerned citizens. Until the day it died, Ege did not exhibit any behavior requiring intervention. Since cases of solitary dolphins are known worldwide, local authorities and bay residents were informed not to disturb the dolphin. Unfortunately, the dolphin, which washed ashore outside the bay on June 14th, died shortly afterward. Following an initial examination at the Çeşme Municipality Animal Shelter, after the dolphin was rescued by municipal teams, its internal organs were sent to our Foundation for further analysis.
Preliminary examination by our Foundation's experts revealed circulatory problems in its internal organs, particularly signs of infection in the respiratory and digestive systems, as well as severe parasitic infestation in the digestive system, lungs, kidneys, subcutaneous fat tissue, and skin. Due to these reasons, samples were taken from the weakened dolphin Ege's organs for further examination, and the results will be evaluated separately. For cases of marine mammals stranded alive, especially dolphins and whales, although the chances of survival are low, a specialized and authorized marine mammal rehabilitation center, as is the case in many countries that host these species, has become necessary in our country.
