1st NATIONAL JELLYFISH WORKSHOP FINAL DECLARATION
May 20-21, 2011, Bodrum, Muğla
Some of the meeting participants together
1) The workshop, held at the Bodrum Underwater Archaeology Museum on May 20, 2011, started at 09:30 and ended at 17:30 with 5 sessions.
2) The articles submitted by the experts participating in the workshop were published in the book "WORKSHOP ON JELLYFISH AND OTHER GELATINOUS SPECIES IN TURKISH MARINE WATERS" with the support of TÜDAV, and this book was distributed to all participants.
3) In the general discussion and evaluation section of the workshop, the proposal to create Turkish names for all jellyfish found in Turkish waters was accepted;
It was decided to use the following names for the jellyfish:
Moon Jellyfish for Aurelia aurita
SEA LUNG JELLYFISH for Rhizostoma pulmo
PURPLE STINGING JELLYFISH for Pelagia noctiluca
BLUE JELLYFISH for Cotylorhiza tuberculata
COMPASS JELLYFISH for Chrysaora hysoscella
UPSIDE-DOWN JELLYFISH for Cassiopea andromeda
MIGRANT JELLYFISH for Rhopilema nomadica
WHITE-SPOTTED JELLYFISH for Phyllorhiza punctata
4) It was suggested that, drawing attention to the negative health effects of venomous jellyfish on the human body, collaboration with public health experts be established to record injuries caused by jellyfish stings in hospitals as "Jellyfish injuries" rather than "Insect stings".
4) 5) It was decided to conduct joint information exchange and notification for the National Jellyfish Monitoring Program (www.denizanasi.org), to adhere to ethical rules and protocols for publications arising from these notifications, and to develop a protocol on this matter.
6) It was suggested that more information be provided to fishermen regarding the relationship and importance of jellyfish to fisheries, and that educational meetings be held on this subject.
7) While it was suggested that studies be conducted to encourage more detailed examination of the effects of jellyfish observed in our waters due to climate change, pollution, and changes in the food chain on the ecosystem, fisheries, tourism, public health, and those engaged in marine activities, it was decided to convey the importance and seriousness of this issue to a wider audience.
Respectfully submitted to the public.
