The MARLISCO European Video Competition awards have been presented!
The Turkish awards of the MARLISCO European Video Competition, organized to draw attention to the problem of marine litter, were presented by the Turkish Marine Research Foundation (TÜDAV) at a ceremony held at the ITU Science Center on April 25, 2014.
At the ceremony, where the opening speech was given by TÜDAV President Prof. Dr. Bayram Öztürk, Fatih Sağlambilen and Yunus Emre Akbaş, students from Ordu Başöğretmen Anadolu High School, won the "First Prize" with their video titled "HipHop Rap Stands by Our Seas". Selected from among 30 videos by the MARLISCO European Video Competition Turkey Selection Committee, the video features a HipHop-Rap song with lyrics by Fatih Sağlambilen, in which young people protest against the damage caused by marine litter and invite people to be more aware of this problem.
In the ceremony, where 6 awards were given, including First Place, Second Place, Third Place, Honorable Mention, Public Vote Special Award, and Jury Special Award, the Second Place Award went to TED Istanbul College Foundation Private High School for their video titled "The Dance of the Seagull"; the Third Place Award went to Antalya Fettah Tamince Maritime Vocational High School for their video titled "Empathy"; and the Honorable Mention Award went to Istanbul Barbaros Hayrettinpaşa Maritime Vocational High School for their video titled "I'm Sorry!".
The video titled "HipHop Rap Stands by Our Seas," which received the most likes (3899 likes) in the public vote on YouTube, also won the "Public Vote Special Award".
The "Jury Special Award" was given by the Selection Committee to the video titled "A Cry from Yomra Maden Village: Let the Seas Not Be Polluted," prepared by 8th-grade students from Yomra Maden Village Middle School, located 40 km from the sea in Trabzon, which addresses the negative effects of marine litter. The Selection Committee, comprised of distinguished individuals such as
Prof. Dr. Bayram Öztürk (Academician - President of TÜDAV), Bülent Yurdakul (Producer-Director), Ayşe Şahika Ertan (Founding Member of Nature Watchers Association and TÜDAV), Bengiz Özdereli (Underwater Film Producer and Cinematographer), and Aysun Öztürk (Class Teacher), evaluated the videos using a scoring system based on impact, content, and technical aspects, and selected the first, second, third, and honorable mention videos, as well as 10 finalist videos for public voting.
The MARLISCO Video Competition was organized between September 9, 2014 and February 14, 2014 as part of the MARLISCO project, a European Union initiative launched in 2012 to raise awareness and foster shared understanding among young people about the socio-ecological impacts and negative consequences of marine litter in Europe.
The competition, held simultaneously in 14 European countries with coastlines – Italy, the Netherlands, England, France, Slovenia, Ireland, Romania, Germany, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Spain, Portugal, Turkey, and Denmark – was organized in Türkiye by the Turkish Marine Research Foundation, a MARLISCO Project partner. Open to young people aged 12-18, the competition received 30 video submissions from Türkiye.
The video that won first prize in Turkey will be part of a final film compiled from the best videos of 14 countries, and its views will be heard as a loud and powerful voice alongside those of other young Europeans. Furthermore, representatives of the winning video will be invited to the EU Maritime Days Ceremony in Bremen, Germany on May 19-20, 2014, where they will attend the premiere of the final film compilation.
The “MARLISCO Marine Debris Awareness Exhibition” was also inaugurated!
Following the MARLISCO Video Competition Award Ceremony, the “MARLISCO Marine Debris Awareness Exhibition” was also opened! Prepared as part of the MARLISCO Project, the exhibition offers answers to questions such as: Why is marine debris a problem? Do you know the source of marine debris? How does marine debris affect people and the ecosystem? How long do you think plastic bottles, plastic bags, newspapers, cigarette butts, or tin cans take to decompose in the sea? What materials make up the majority of marine debris in the Mediterranean and Black Seas? What are the challenges that marine debris poses for Turkey? Are there solutions to marine debris? What can we do to reduce marine debris?
The exhibition, which features materials such as awareness posters, barrels, waste, and awareness signs, can be visited at the ITU Science Center until May 2, 2014. Information on future dates and locations of the exhibition can be found at www.tudav.org.

The Honorable Mention Award was given to Kadir Ağcı and Ali Ölçek, students from Istanbul Barbaros Hayrettinpaşa Maritime Vocational High School, for their video titled "I'm Sorry!"
Third place was awarded to Antalya Fettah Tamince Maritime Vocational High School. Umut Eren Öztürk accepted the award on behalf of the team that prepared the video.
