Let's Keep the Mediterranean Clean Event
Simultaneous beach cleanups were carried out in Mediterranean countries.
As part of the “Clean Up the Med” campaign, a simultaneous coastal cleanup effort was carried out in all Mediterranean countries, including Turkey, on May 24, 25, and 26, 2013. The effort took place at 1500 locations across a wide spectrum of Mediterranean countries, from Italy to Algeria, Croatia to Egypt, France to Jordan, Greece to Israel, Lebanon to Malta, Morocco to Albania, Palestine to Portugal, Serbia to Montenegro, Syria to Slovenia, Spain to Tunisia, and Cyprus to Turkey.
In Turkey, the effort was organized by the Turkish Marine Research Foundation (TÜDAV) on Sunday, May 26, 2013, at Riva Beach in Istanbul. With the participation of nearly 40 volunteers, Riva Central Beach and Riva Seafood Beach were cleaned of litter. A total of 355 kg of waste was collected: 210.5 kg at Riva Central Beach and 144.5 kg at Riva Seafood Beach. The waste, mostly plastic, was transported to landfills by a garbage truck directed by Beykoz Municipality.
Launched in 1995, the “Clean Up the Med” campaign is one of the largest volunteer-based environmental campaigns. Supported by UNEP, the campaign is led by the Italian environmental protection organization Legambiente and supported by environmental NGOs across Mediterranean countries.
