Children cleaned Riva Beach!
As part of the “Clean Up the Med” campaign, a simultaneous coastal cleanup effort was conducted in all Mediterranean countries, including Turkey, on May 23, 24, and 25, 2014. In Türkiye, the effort was carried out by the Turkish Marine Research Foundation (TÜDAV) on Sunday, May 25, 2014, at Riva Beach in Istanbul. With the participation of 31 volunteers, including 17 children, Riva Central Beach and Riva 2nd Bay Seafood Beach were cleaned of litter. A total of 165.5 kg of litter was collected: 70.5 kg at Riva Central Beach and 95.5 kg at Riva 2nd Bay Seafood Beach.
At Riva Central Beach, the most common type of litter was cigarette butts, followed by plastic bottle caps, shredded plastic, and tin cans. The most unusual piece of litter was a car body part; the presence of "balanus" (a type of metal fragment) on it suggests it had washed ashore from the sea.
At 2nd Bay Seafood Beach, the litter consisted mainly of plastic pieces, fishing nets, and glass shards.
After the beach cleanup, the waste was transported to landfills by garbage trucks directed by Beykoz Municipality.
This operation was also carried out by TÜDAV last year on Riva Beach.
The Clean Up the Med
campaign, launched in 1995, is one of the largest volunteer-based environmental campaigns. Supported by UNEP, the campaign is led by the Italian environmental protection organization Legambiente and supported by environmental NGOs across Mediterranean countries.
The work has been carried out in 1500 locations, from Italy to Algeria, Croatia to Egypt, France to Jordan, Greece to Israel, Lebanon to Malta, Morocco to Albania, Palestine to Portugal, Serbia to Montenegro, Syria to Slovenia, Spain to Tunisia, and Cyprus to Turkey.
