2nd Workshop for the Establishment of a Turkish Antarctic Research Base
The “2nd Workshop for the Establishment of a Turkish Antarctic Research Base” took place on June 17, 2013, in Istanbul Technical University, Maritime Faculty, Tuzla, Istanbul. Academicians, representatives from the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Turkish Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, the Turkish Ministry of Transportation, Maritime Affairs and Communication; TUBITAK, General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration and the Turkish Navy attended the workshop.
Turkey’s first Antarctic initiative, the legal situation of Antarctica, Antarctica’s place in global politics, Turkish Antarctic road map, medical aspects of Antarctic research, base location, logistics and the recently discovered mineral “Meridianiite” were discussed.
Energy resources are declining and the Antarctic becomes more important each day. In the workshop, a road map for the establishment of a Turkish Antarctic research base was proposed. According to the road map; a science programme defining the Antarctic research will be written; countries with Antarctic research bases will be collaborated with in order to educate master and Ph.D students and protocols under the Antarctic Treaty will be adopted.
