He was born in 1960, on the Black Sea coast of Turkey. After he got Ph.D. on Marine Biology from the Institute of Marine Sciences, Istanbul University, in 1990, he has been studying on fishery science, marine conservation and biological oceanography in various seas and oceans in the world. He is Founder and Director of Turkish Marine Research Foundation, and currently Editor for the Journal of Black Sea and Mediterranean Environment. He has published four books and over 100 papers on fisheries, marine biology and ecology.

After graduating from Columbia University as an economics major, Sibel received her MBA degree from Bilkent University and PhD from Boğaziçi University. She worked for the Black Sea Environmental Programme of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), then joined UNDP as director of the National Programme on Environment and Development. After working for UNDP for 4 years she worked as Regional Director for Turkey and the Black Sea of the Regional Environmental Center (REC) for 10 years. She was born in 1981 in İstanbul. After graduating from Saint-Joseph College, she received her Bachelor’s degree in the field of biology and environment at Université de Bretagne Occidentale. She began a master’s degree program at European Institute of Marine Studies (Bretagne) but pursued and earned it in Centre d’Océanologie de Marseille in order to study the Mediterranean Sea. She completed her residency training at the Dept. of Underwater and Hyperbaric Medicine in Istanbul Medical Faculty, I. U. in 1997.
